About TPU
Welcome to The Pilates University, where tradition meets innovation. Our comprehensive teacher training program is designed to give you a deep understanding of classical Pilates while exploring today’s contemporary movement principles. Whether your goal is to become a confident, knowledgeable instructor or simply to deepen your personal practice, this program offers the structure, mentorship, and hands-on experience you need to thrive.
Each term includes both Mat and Reformer training modules — allowing you to build from strong foundations to advanced teaching proficiency.
Module 1: History of Pilates and Movement Foundations (1 weekend)
Discover the origins of Pilates and the story of Joseph Pilates himself. This module introduces core movement principles, alignment basics, and the six Pilates principles that guide every exercise. You’ll build a strong understanding of body mechanics and functional anatomy that will support your teaching journey.
Module 2: Classical Mat Pilates Repertoire (2 weekends)
Learn the complete classical mat sequence as Joseph Pilates originally designed it. You’ll study each exercise in detail — setup, execution, modifications, and cueing — while developing your own confidence in performing and teaching the work.
Module 3: Mat Teaching Lab (2 weekends)
Put your knowledge into practice. In this interactive module, you’ll refine your cueing, class sequencing, and teaching voice. You’ll receive direct feedback, practice teaching your peers, and learn how to lead with clarity and connection.
Module 4: Contemporary Mat Pilates “Sculpt” (1 weekend)
Explore modern interpretations of the Pilates mat work. This module introduces creative class formats, props, and small equipment to help you adapt the traditional method for group fitness, private training, and creative programming.

Understand the design and mechanics of the Pilates Reformer. You’ll learn safety, equipment setup, spring selection, and how to maintain optimal alignment and control throughout each exercise.
Module 2: Classical Reformer Pilates Repertoire (2 weekends)
Dive into the original Reformer sequence and progressions. You’ll gain an in-depth understanding of the traditional order, transitions, and the principles that make the Reformer such a transformative tool.
Module 3: Reformer Teaching Lab (2 weekends)
Apply your learning through practice teaching sessions, feedback, and real-world scenarios. You’ll gain confidence in guiding clients of all levels, offering progressions and regressions, and managing flow within a session.
Module 4: Contemporary Reformer Pilates “Sculpt” (1 weekend)
Blend classical technique with modern movement. This creative module explores innovative choreography, contemporary strength elements, and how to bring your own style to the Pilates Reformer while honoring the method’s roots.
